Dr. Rao received his undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Columbia University. He obtained his medical degree as well as masters’ in business administration from Tulane University. Dr. Rao completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he received the UAB Resident Research Award. He subsequently completed fellowship training in hematology, medical oncology, as well as HCT and cellular therapy at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Rao is a bone marrow transplant physician board certified in hematology, medical oncology, and internal medicine. He specializes in the use of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and cellular therapy to treat malignant/non-malignant disorders of the blood.

Dr. Rao’s research interests include ameliorating graft versus host disease and improving metabolic control in transplant recipients. Prior to medical school, he was a research technician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he obtained extensive experience in bench research in the field of HCT. Dr. Rao’s work has been published in numerous high-impact medical journals, including Blood, the Journal of Experimental Medicine, and Immunity.
